Southern Cassowary

Southern Cassowary

This flightless bird is nearly as tall as the Emu. It has a more solid build, has brightly coloured skin patches and a horn surfaced casque which possibly allows it to push through tropical vegetation. The female is larger and brighter in colouration than the male who incubates the light green eggs. These birds are considered dangerous to humans because of their powerful kick. They live in rainforests in far Northern Queensland and feed on fallen fruit, fungi and insects.
