Wedge-tailed Eagle

This large brown or black bird with a long wedge-shaped tail is the largest Australian eagle and is found throughout the continent though rare to uncommon in settled areas. Taking flight heavily with slow, deep, powerful wing beats, once aloft it soars to great heights skilfully using updrafts of thermals rarely needing to flap its huge upswept wings. They usually hunt over open country and nest in forests or scrubland building an enormous stick nest in a large tall tree.
